The post of Poet Laureate was traditionally held for life. This tradition was broken by Andrew Motion, who stipulated when taking on the role in 1999 that he would fulfil it for only ten years. His successor, Carol Ann Duffy, was appointed in 2009 for a fixed term of ten years.
